Windows 7 and Ubuntu are two of the operating systems that I have started liking a lot and as a       matter of fact I even transformed   my ubuntu karmic to windows 7 with the Windows                7 transformation pack for ubuntu.

How To Install Windows 7 transformation Pack In Ubuntu Karmic Koala

Download the Windows 7 Transformation pack for ubuntu and extract the tar.gz files.

Right click on an empty space in your ubuntu desktop and go to change desktop background.

Here you will see the theme tab ,click on it and apply the Windows 7 theme for ubuntu.

To install the windows 7 dock bar included in ubuntu in windows 7 transformation pack for ubuntu follow the steps below.

Copy dockbar.py on “/usr/bin” folder
copy dockbar folder on “/usr/lib”
copy GNOME_dockbarAplet.server on “/usr/lib/bonobo/server
install python-gnome2-desktop by typing or pasting(ctrl+shift+v) this code in you ubuntu terminal sudo apt-get install python-gnome2-desktop.

How To Re-Install Ubuntu

You may accidentally have corrupted your or misconfigured something in your ubuntu installation.
OR in case you had an unfortunate unsuccessful upgrade and their was no backup made or done.

Their are two commands that you can use reinstall ubuntu:-

1-You can  use this command and run it in your terminal:-

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh -a

This will install ubuntu like a fresh installation and reconfigures each and every package completely and automatically.

Note:- This will take sometime as a whole new installation of ubuntu will be done.
2-Or you can run this command in your terminal

sudo apt-get install -f

To enable some of the cool features in ubuntu/mint gloria you need to have the drivers for what ever graphic card(nvidia/ati) you have.

Here some ways that will help in installing the ati/nvidia drivers in your ubuntu installation.

Installing the nvidia/ati drivers using the hardware manager

Go to your menu->system->administration->hardware drivers

You will see a window pop up with the drivers that are available to you,according to your graphic card.

select the dirver(ati or nvidia) and click on activate

select the driver(ati or nvidia) and click on activate

Here you can select any of the drivers you want and hit activate-Remember latest ones do not always work,so you should also try the older ones before giving it up.

Now in case no drivers are showing up on the pop up window then you could use the next method.

Insall nividia/ati drivers in ubuntu using the add or remove application.

First of all you need to have the add or remove installed-to install it go to your spftware manager and search for add or remove and install it

Now under your applications menu open the add or remove,and search for the driver you want-nividia or ati drivers

You will get a list of drivers-install the  one that you need

Install nvidia/ati drivers in ubuntu using the synaptics manager

Under the applications,go to the administration you will synaptics manager-open it

select the driver accroding to your graphics card

Search for the drivers according to your graphics card.

How to use aerosnap in linux(compiz)

Aero snap is the feature that is inbuilt in windows 7 and its really handy at times.
If you re using linux then you probably know that linux is godly for multitasking .
Being so highly dependent on coding and stuff makes linux highly customizable and make a operating system that’s all according to your likings.

So here we go-using aerosnap in linux

You need to have two files for using the aerosnap in linux
wmctrl
xdpyinfo-for the versions prior to karmic koala and x11-utils for karmic koala

Install them using your terminal or do it manually using the ubuntu tweak.

After installing the two applications mentioned above-go to your compiz confing settings manager and then to your commands

Now open the Edge Binding tab(in the top menu)

Under this tab select the following options from the drop down:-)

Run command 0 – set to left

Run command 1 – set to right

Run command 2 – set to top

Now go back and under the general display options-set Edge trigger delay to something around 450

When I first started using Ubuntu (linux in general) I had some problems while navigating as I had been using windows for a long time.

But then as my linux quest moved ahead I found this cool linux kubuntu version which has a interface somewhat similar to that of windows.

So if you are using ubuntu or planning to use it in the future this ubuntu trick will come really handy.
The benefit of using this method (i.e installing kde in ubuntu) is that you don’t need to install kubuntu as a operating system in your machine(pc or laptop)

Kubuntu can be installed in ubuntu using the package manager but its really easy to install using the terminal.

To open your terminal click on your menu and somewhere on the bottom you will find it.

In your terminal copy and paste( ctrl+shift+v) the code below in it and hit enter

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Now you will be asked to enter your ubuntu password(enter it).
You will now have to confirm the installation to begin-just press Y(yes) and and the installation will begin.
Wait for the installation to finish.

As the installation of kubuntu proceeds you will be asked to select your login manager as gdm (ubuntu-GDOME) or kdm (KDOME). I had opted to for the kde since I like to try new things.

Now you need to Restart your machine.

In the login window you will see option button at lower left hand corner.

Now you will be asked to select a session-select KDE and login.

As you will login you will notice something different in your machine-start menu which is almost identical to the one in windows.

IF you are using the ubuntu inside VMware-you might get some absurd results while using this trick.

The solution to this- Replace your the file named xorg.conf.1 with xorg.conf,restart and your machine will run hard and jaunt.

To restore your Ubuntu boot splash theme run the following in your terminal

sudo update-alternatives –config usplash-artwork.so

Select the option for Ubuntu(/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-ubuntu.so).Similar Posts:
